My pledge to you
From my heart, thank you. Thank you to everyone who voted for me and who has sent me kind words in the three weeks since I was elected as your MP for Chelsea and Fulham.
Being given the opportunity to represent is a great honour and privilege. I promise to represent all my constituents.
I’m hugely excited about being part of this new Labour government. We’ve already started the work of renewing our country, as His Majesty set out in a packed King’s speech.
What they don’t tell you about being a new MP is that you have to set up an office and hire staff at breakneck speed while undergoing endless parliamentary and security training, all at the same as time trying to respond helpfully to the many constituents who write to you.
I’m currently working my way through well over a thousand emails. If one of these is from you and you’re waiting for a response, please bear with me – I assure you I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
This Tuesday, I made my first speech (known as a “maiden” speech) in the House of Commons. I noted that alongside the many wonderful things about Chelsea and Fulham, there is painful poverty, as evidenced by a massive increase in the number of people using food banks in recent years.
I pledged to my constituents to work with the Labour government to build a stronger economy and a fairer, safer and kinder society – one where we strive to make food banks a thing of the past.
You can watch the speech in full by clicking on the video below. The Evening Standard reported on it here.
I also asked questions about learning from the Covid pandemic and recouping the billions spent on useless PPE awarded through the previous government’s VIP lane.
If you’d like to keep an eye on what I’m doing and saying as your MP, please follow me on social media at the links below or sign up to my newsletter.
Thank you again for the honour of representing you.
Best wishes
Ben Coleman
